As a central part of the Girls Who Code Club experience, we worked on a Computer Science Impact Project, where we used computer science to solve a problem relevant to our Club and community. Through this project, we learned the fundamentals computer science concepts of loops, variables, conditionals and functions that form the basis for all computer programming languages while also building teamwork and leadership skills.
The Problem
The girls talked about pressures from school making them stressed or depressed. They decided to work on a website to help our peers when they are stressed out or feeling depressed.
The Solution
The girls worked together to brainstorm what types of things would cheer them up on a website. The also discussed what other functions the website would need to have (resource page, blog, search functions).
Technical Hurdles
Our biggest hurdle was finding a platform to host our website. We were able to go through the UI/UX design process with one idea and then had to adjust for the platform that we eventually chose to program our site. The girls also enjoyed learing to use Scratch to make the games for the site.
This is our final version of the website. We hope you enjoy it.
